Bacterial vaginosis is a common infection seen globally among women of child bearing age. It can lead to complications, particularly during pregnancy. Recurrence is also noted frequently. The infection usually occurs when there is a disruption of the normal lactobacillus flora in vagina and its replacement by pathogens. Probiotics are known to restore normal vaginal flora and maintain normal pH and can serve as a potential alternative to antibiotics in future. A study published in the International Journal of Medical and Dental Sciences evaluated the effect of supplementation of standard antibiotic therapy with oral probiotics (Lactobacillus) for treatment of bacterial vaginosis. One hundred women diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis were randomly divided into two groups. Diagnosis was made using Amsel’s criteria and Nugent scoring was done. Group A received metronidazole, 400 mg BD for 7 days along with oral probiotic tablet containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus BD for 6 weeks while Group B received oral metronidazole, 400 mg BD for 7 days. In all, 2 patients in Group A and 5 patients in Group B did not complete the study. At the end of 7 days, there was improvement in symptoms in terms of decrease in itching, odor and discharge. There was a significant difference in mean Nugent score before and after treatment between group A and group B at the end of 6 weeks. The improvement in patients taking probiotics along with standard antibiotic therapy was found to be significantly more as compared to patients given antibiotics alone.
